Once again, it all comes back to Robinson Cano. His putrid start to the season has held the Yankees offense back. A team might be able to withstand one or two replacement-level hitters in a lineup, but three is asking a bit much. A few more home runs from him would make a world of difference in this category, and (possibly) have an effect on the rest of the lineup as pitchers would have to fear Cano as well.

Posada's injury is also a problem, as he would likely be in double digits around now as well.

And agreed about Bonds. But it looks like it's not going to happen. Sigh.

Cano and Melky hit when the team hits. If you are looking for them to be on the same level with Jeter/Arod/Giambi/Damon/Matsui/Posada, you're always going to be pissed off. Cano and Melky underperform when they see themselves in the mindset of "if I don't get a hit here, the team is going to keep losing."

As for the pitching, it is what it is. It will get better because Mo is in the bullpen and I think in 20 years people will see him as one of the greatest coaches in the game. I say this because everything I know about Farnsworth tells me he probably doesn't listen too well. And look, he's been messing with a cutter -- good enough to throw it a few times this year -- and he is learning how to pitch which I think accounts for his episodic success.

I'm reconciled to this being a rebuilding year but by October a lot could be different, so secretly I believe we can still take it all. Give me a Yankee team that goes into the playoffs hot -- all the rest of this is foreplay.

What was really funny was the irony exuded by Buzz. He criticizes deadspin for being poorly written and unprofessional, yet maintains a constant stream of profanities, rudely interrupts and then throws together a hodgepodge of logical fallacies as his argument (ad-hominem attacks, appeal to antiquity, appeal to ridicule and hasty generalization). Didn't Buzz ever take a class in writing or learn about these things? He actually out-Deadspin's Deadspin. If Costas is putting Bissinger forward as the spokesman for old-school sports journalism then it's no wonder people are looking for something new.

Cheers,
Jeff

Yeah, He banned me too. Probably because I'm a Red Sox fan and having the same name would be very confusing to Yankee fans. I can appreciate Yankee fans don't like to hear anyone talking poorly about Jeter the Tax Cheater or Roger-the-question-Dodger. But hey, I can appreciate him removing my comments. I'd do the same if he commented on my site.
