Not Starting For the New York Yankees

April 3, 2008

This dude does not play for the Yankees.

This guy will not be the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees tonight. Some kid named Hughes will be.

In other news, the Yankees still have like $19.6 million to spend on uniform patches, that they otherwise would not have.

Give em hell Phil!

Not even faster than the speed of smell.

That’s basically what Mussina is working with these days.

On one hand, I’m going to love watching him this season if he can pull a David Cone circa 1998, the quintessential sore armed righty basically making his season up as he goes. Cone used to invent pitches and change arm slots and release points like a master. He didn’t have the velocity so he improvised chicanery to get hitters out.

I don’t think Moose will have the same ability, but there’s still something cool about watching the old guy trying to scratch and claw his way to a respectable season.

Last night, he pretty much kept the Yankees in the game, it was 3-0 into the 6th and in total, Moose went 6 1/3 and only gave up 3 ER. Unfortunately the Yankees bats were rendered quiet all night by A.J. Burnett, whose lone mistake resulted in a towering 2 run homer by A-Rod.

Burnett is a bad ass when he’s on and he was on last night.

One other note from this game: Abreu and Jeter’s baserunning has been pretty bad this series.  I’m not sure why the fuck Abreu felt the need to try to steal second in the first inning last night, with 2 out and A-Rod at the plate.

As for Jeter, a night after getting caught stealing, he reaches on a throwing error in the first, but then tries to take second and was out by a mile. I kinda miss Larry Bowa already.

Blarg. I’ll post more on this game later today, because I have a few bones to pick with Orel Hersheiser, but I left my notes in my other pants.
